AccuWeather Alert: Tornado watches, warnings as severe storms hit Tri-State

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A Tornado Watch has been issued for New York City and much of the Tri-State area until 9 p.m.

The watch covers the five boroughs of New York City along with Rockland, Westchester and Nassau counties.

All of New Jersey is under the Tornado Watch. Several counties in New Jersey were placed under Tornado Warnings and a trained spotter confirmed one in Stanhope.

In Connecticut, the watch includes Fairfield and New Haven counties.

A Tornado Warning was also issued for Sullivan County in New York state.

The first round of storms began to course through the area before midday, and for later in the day, there is concern that future rounds could wallop areas in New Jersey and New York City that were already socked with flash flooding on Saturday.

The earlier storms have hit north and west of New York City. Future rounds of storms Tuesday evening could pack strong thunderstorms, hail and a possible tornado.

A Flood Watch was issued effective at 8 a.m. Tuesday for much of New Jersey and New York City as an "enhanced" (level 3 our of 5) risk of severe thunderstorms now covers much of New Jersey and even parts of New York City.

There is also a level 2 out of 4 risk of flash flooding, mainly off to the south of New York City and central and southern parts of New Jersey.

Storms will begin to subside late Tuesday night, but there could still be some pockets of showers into the overnight hours.

On Wednesday, there could still be a shower or thundershower around before we completely dry out into the day on Thursday, when sunshine returns.

Friday will be a beautiful end to the work week, and the weekend looks to be warm and mostly sunny.
