NEW YORK (WABC) -- A round of strong thunderstorms is expected to move through the region overnight, prompting another AccuWeather Alert.

Some of these storms could produce heavy downpours and damaging wind gusts overnight, creating the potential for standing water and a difficult commute Thursday morning. Lingering showers are likely into the morning before moving offshore.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for Sullivan County through Thursday morning due to the combination of recent rainfall and an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain expected overnight. Elevated water levels in streams, creeks and rivers, along with poor drainage, could lead to localized flooding. Even outside the watch area, motorists should be alert for standing water during the morning commute.

Once the rain moves out, sunshine will return, and temperatures will quickly climb.

The combination of heat and humidity will make conditions feel particularly uncomfortable south of New York City, where a Heat Advisory has been issued for portions of New Jersey, including Monmouth, Ocean and Mercer counties. Afternoon heat index values could reach between 95 and 100 degrees in those areas. Beachgoers can expect favorable conditions overall, although a moderate rip current risk will continue along the coast.

Thursday will feature a mix of sun and clouds after the morning showers end. While the atmosphere will remain warm and humid, any thunderstorms that develop during the afternoon should be isolated to scattered rather than widespread. The best chance for those storms appears to be south and west of New York City, though a few isolated cells could develop elsewhere across the region.

Thursday night will remain warm and humid with temperatures holding near 71 degrees under partly to mostly cloudy skies. A lingering shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out as a front stalls nearby. By Friday, humidity will begin to ease, although much of the day may still feel somewhat muggy before noticeably more comfortable air arrives Friday night. Most areas should remain dry, though an isolated shower remains possible.

The holiday weekend is shaping up to be an excellent stretch of weather overall. Saturday will be partly sunny and pleasant with a high near 79 degrees. Both Saturday and Sunday are expected to start with abundant sunshine before some fair-weather clouds develop during the afternoon. A brief isolated shower cannot be ruled out north and east of the city on either day, but most locations will stay dry and comfortable.

Labor Day currently looks to be the sunniest day of the long weekend with a high near 78 degrees. The stretch of pleasant weather is expected to continue into Tuesday and Wednesday, with only a diminishing chance of a shower by Tuesday.
