FLUSHING, Queens (WABC) -- A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling from a sixth-floor window in Queens Thursday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. at an apartment building on 38th Avenue in Flushing.

The boy's fall was stopped by a third-floor terrace.

He was rushed to Cohen Children's Medical Center, where he is said to be awake and alert.

He is listed in critical but stable condition.

Authorities say the boy's mother was watching the child but may have been distracted by an elderly resident, believed to be the boy's grandfather, inside the apartment.

The incident is being investigated as an accident, and no charges are expected to be filed.

It is unclear if the window had window guards.
