Pedestrian struck and killed in Brooklyn Heights, driver arrested
A driver was arrested for suspicion of DWI after a woman was fatally struck and killed in Brooklyn Heights.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS -- A pedestrian was fatally struck by a speeding BMW driver who then crashed into another car on a dangerous stretch of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn Heights.

The 31-year-old woman was struck by the sedan, traveling at a high rate of speed on Atlantic Avenue, at around 9:55 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The vehicle continued on and rear ended another sedan. Both vehicles veered to the right and struck an outdoor dining structure on the north curb line, before coming to a rest.

The 40-year-old driver of the other vehicle was not injured

The victim, later identified as Katherine Harris, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old driver was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Police announced later Monday that Erick S. Taxilaga Trujillo is facing charges of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, driving while ability impaired and refusal to take breath test.

Residents in the area say the intersection is considered dangerous.

The investigation remains ongoing.
