12-year old boy charged with arson in fire that displaced dozens in Yonkers

YONKERS (WABC) -- A 12-year old boy has been charged with arson for allegedly starting a fire that destroyed a house and an apartment building in Yonkers.

Fire officials say the boy started the fire around 9:30 Saturday night at a home on Saratoga Avenue.

Flames spread to a five-story apartment building next door.

About 70 firefighters were called to the scene, and they were able to get everyone out safely.

It took crews several hours to get the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is helping more than 30 people displaced by the fire.

The boy, a Yonkers resident was transported to Wood Field Cottage, a juvenile detention facility in Valhalla, and will appear in Family Court.
