A Long Island man has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. The defendant, Javier Hernandez, who lives in Bay Shore, had been captured as a fugitive in New Orleans and extradited to Long Island where he stood trial.

A Suffolk County jury found him guilty on Tuesday of criminal sexual act, attempted rape and sexual abuse. The jury deliberated one day.

The victim and her two brothers, who are 7 and 11, testified during the trial about the crimes, which occurred in August 2006. Hernandez faces 25 years in prison. He will be sentenced in Riverhead on May 6.
