Beach getaways for Memorial Day weekend

Summer is officially about a month away. But New York City's parks commissioner has good news for people craving "fun in the sun."Two Long Island beaches have been rated among the nation's best by a Florida professor who calls himself "Dr. Beach."

Stephen P. Leatherman, a Florida International University professor, has listed Coopers Beach in Southampton, and Main Beach in East Hampton among the nation's best.

"Dr. Beach" picked Caladesi Island in Florida is the as the best beach in the 2008 ranking.

He compiles his list as part of the National Healthy Beaches Campaign, and this year plans a television special featuring the nation's best beaches.

In New York City, the beaches span a total of 14 miles, and attracted 14 million people last summer.

They include: Orchard Beach in the Bronx; Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; and Midland Beach, South Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.
