Store owners turn tables on robbers

JERSEY CITY - A husband and wife were fed up with getting robbed. So the owners of the mini-mart on Old Bergen Road and Bartholdi Avenue in Jersey City's Greenville section decided to fight back.

Margarita Pena made it clear she is not going to be intimidated. The fiery storeowner wasn't about to bow as gunmen tried to rob her bodega. Instead, she pulled out the pepper spray squirting it on the robber who had a gun pointing at her.

Her husband who laid low at first came out and punched the second gunman before they fled.

The couple had been robbed twice before so this time they were ready to act.

When the crooks ran to a getaway car, the Penas followed and got the license plate. Police then tracked down the vehicles and made five arrests.

The suspects were found with property from another robbery, which took place the same day. Police said they also found a loaded 9MM in the car.

Authorities identified the suspects as 19-year-old Michael Moore, 20-year-old Maurice Williams, 19-year-old Jarvis Johnson, 18-year-old-Dean McCovery and a juvenile.
