Former New York Mayor David Dinkins is recovering after undergoing a hospital procedure to install a pacemaker. His law partner, Peter Johnson Jr., says Dinkins was admitted to a Manhattan hospital on Tuesday for the medical device to regulate his heartbeat and hopes to be released by the weekend.

Dinkins is 81. He rose from clubhouse politics to become the city's first black mayor and served from 1990 to 1993.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Dinkins on Wednesday night to wish him well.
