As founder and president of Save-a-Pet, a no kill animal rescue agency in Port Jefferson Station, her efforts to provide loving homes for abused and abandoned pets are well-known and supported by animal lovers across the community.
"I always try to help people in these situations. I never thought I'd find myself in it," she said.
Scofield and her husband were not home at the time.
Miniature horses kept in a barn behind the house survived the fire and for that Scofield is thankful, but her heart is heavy as she grieves for the animals that this time she could not save.
Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and released from a local hospital.
There's still no word on how the fire started but Scofield believes it was electrical.
