Saving on back-to-school shopping

MOUNT VERNON - Gas prices, food prices and now it's time to do your back to school shopping.

Everyone is looking for the same thing -- bargains.

You can find them, but you just have to know how and where to begin.

Sue Perry is the deputy editor of ShopSmart magazine. She says it's all about having a plan. If you don't have one, why not use hers?

First, she says don't stock up. Buy a bit now while the summer sales are on, and then some later when the fall sales begin.

Stall with summer sale items. Buy now for 50-to-70 percent off, and wear the clothes into September when the weather is still relatively warm.

Make your children try things on, so you don't waste time and money.

Shopping for shoes online can save you big. You might also find a better selection.

Whether it's clothes, bookpacks or school supplies, we found many parents at a Target in Mount Vernon weighing their options.

The folks at ShopSmart say it might take you some extra time, but it will be worth it.
