The patrol car, driven by 31-year-old Thomas Raji was transporting a prisoner to the Middlesex County jail when it collided with a car around 3:45 a.m. Friday.
The noise sent Jason Sims, a resident running out of his home . He says he saw a Perth Amboy police squad car, the driver's side bashed in.
Next, Sims saw the driver of the other car -- a ''younger kid,'' in his words
"He hopped out of his car and runs to the other car and sees the other car and the officer he's like 'Oh my God'," Sims said.
Officer Raji was transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m. The front seat passenger in the police car, another police officer, was taken by ambulance with serious injuries too.
The official says the prisoner and two other people in the other car were injured, but their conditions are unknown. The accident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about this collision is asked to call Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Investigator Jeffrey Temple at (732) 745-3373.
