Authorities thought it was the girl's body because it was found in a place where they thought it would turn up and had jewelry that matched what she was wearing. But they wanted to be absolutely certain before positively identifying it.
U.S. Coast Guard officials say they recovers about eight bodies a year in the Niagara Gorge and along the mouth of the river into Lake Ontario, some of which are never identified.
