Second arrest in brutal bat beating

BRONX Spanish radio host Pelagio De La Cruz has not been able to speak since the September 14th attack, which was caught on surveillance video in the Fordham section. Authorities say the 52-year-old was pummeled as he returned to his estranged wife's apartment building at 2460 Davidson Avenue at around 3:35 a.m. Sunday.

The suspect believed to be the man wielding the bat surrendered to police in the Bronx with his attorney Monday afternoon. He has been identified as 26-year-old Jamal Roman, of the Bronx. The first suspect, identified as 20-year-old Gavin Scott, also of the Bronx, surrendered earlier in the day at the urging of his family. Both are facing charges of attempted murder, assault, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

As Scott was led out of the police precinct, he shouted that he was not the man with the bat.

De La Cruz was in the Bronx to visit his three children when he was targeted. Authorities say he will need reconstruction surgery and may lose an eye.

During the week, he hosts a radio show from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on WESX 1030 AM in Chelsea, Massachusetts. The show, named Coneccion Hispanica, addresses issues facing the Hispanic community.
