The complex is located at Congress Street and Woehr Avenue.
Captain Thomas Hayes, of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said a 911 call came in at 6:08 a.m. stating there was a shooting in one of the apartments. Police arrived, and the woman was removed to Kimball Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead around 7 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing between the Lakewood Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Sheriff's Department. They are looking into the possibility that someone entered the apartment and shot the victim.
