Service restored on LIRR

NEW YORK Authorities say a large utility pole was knocked down near a Con Edison substation, just east of the East River tunnels in Queens.

That caused a signal outage at that Long Island City location, which is an important interlocking of tracks for LIRR train traffic in and out of Penn Station.

The problem knocked out westbound service from Penn Station. There were also eastbound delays.

Buses were provided for westbound passengers at some stations east of Jamaica Station. Other passengers arriving in Queens were asked to take the subway

Service was restored around 4:00. Officials expected residual delays of up to 20 minutes.
