Democrat Albio Sires has easily won re-election in the 13th Congressional District, breezing past Republican Joseph Turula in the Democratic stronghold centered in Hudson County. The 55-year-old Sires is a former state Assembly speaker and mayor of West New York.

Turula is a Jersey City lawyer and former Pompton Lakes councilman.

Sires was first elected to Congress in 2006. He filled a vacancy created when Gov. Jon Corzine appointed Robert Menendez to fill his seat in the U.S. Senate.

Sires was 11 when his family left Cuba for the U.S. He was the first Hispanic legislator in the state to serve as Assembly speaker.
