Retired firefighter rescues woman

LAKE CARMEL The fire broke out just before dawn at a home in Kent. The parents and three children got out, but the bed-ridden grandmother was trapped inside.

Retired FDNY member Craig Giuffre rushed into 34 Ashburton Road just before 4 a.m. Giuffre, who lives across the street, ran in through the back door, found the woman and got her out.

All six family members were treated for smoke inhalation at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The displaced family moved into the house just two days ago.

Fire officials said they do not believe they would have been able to reach the woman by the time they arrived at the scene.
