Child struck, killed by vehicle in Queens

QUEENS The accident happened at the intersection of Woodhaven and Rockaway Boulevards in the Woodhaven section at 3:40 p.m..

Witnesses say the 9-year-old boy was crossing the street when a campaign bus hit him.

The minibus was being used by the campaign of Mike Ricatto, who's running in a special election for Joe Addabbo's 32nd City Council District seat. Addabbo's seat was vacated when he was elected to the state senate.

Police arrested the driver, 22-year-old Alexander Aponte, for driving with a suspended license.

The victim was later identified as Ibrihim Ahmed of 79th Avenue in Queens.

Ricatto expressed his sadness in a statement on Tuesday night.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the child whose life was taken in this tragic accident. I have children of my own and can't imagine the pain of losing a child in an accident like the one that occurred today. Respectfully, I have suspended all campaign activities until further notice because the reverence for family loss comes before any politics," he said.
