Woman killed in hit-run while on cell phone

MELVILLE Police say 25-year-old Melissa Scherr was lost and talking to her boyfriend on her cell phone early Saturday when her car was hit from behind by a pickup truck on Route 110 in Melville.

She died hours later at Huntington Hospital.

Suffolk Police say the driver of the truck, 44-year-old Douglas Davis, fled the scene.

Police say Davis was arrested a short time later and failed a field sobriety test.

He was arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip on charges including driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an accident.
