The families woke up to thick, choking smoke filling their apartments this morning.
"I went up there and I already saw the smoke. So, the first thing I did was take up my wife and my son and get out," fire victim Julio Barvecho said.
Julio Barvecho, his wife and two-year-old made it out of the building. His neighbor and three children would fare much worse.
A father jumped from a second floor -- a mother and three kids were rescued by firefighters.
"There was a very heavy smoke condition on the top floor. There were 4 residents on the top floor..they were taken to the hospital. They're all alive and in good condition," FDNY Chief, Tom Jensen said.
The mother was reportedly in cardiac arrest at Jamaica Medical Center.
A little boy, a little girl and their father were at the hospital in serious but stable condition, while another child was at Mary Immaculate Hospital.
