Tavern on the Green changing its name?

NEW YORK That's because the 25-year license to operate the legendary eatery is going on the auction block and many restaurateurs, including Danny Meyer of Union Square Cafe and Drew Nieporent of Nobu, have expressed an interest.

The city, though, cannot pass along the name Tavern on the Green, which is owned by the LeRoy family. The LeRoys also own a Tavern on the Green in Florida and plan to open another in San Francisco.

The storied restaurant, originally a sheep shed and built in 1870, attracts more than a half million patrons a year.
