Fight back against the recession blues

New York Ted Gibson, of his self-named salon, can charge up to $950 for a haircut. Recently, he has noticed an unsettling trend among his clients.

"People are pushing their appointments back," he said. "If they used to go to get a hair cut every four weeks, they push it back six or seven or eight weeks."

Ted came up with an idea he is calling "Recessionista Tuesdays."

He says business can be a little slower on Tuesdays. So to help fill the seats, the team is offering deep discounts. A haircut costs $75, a blow dry costs $40 and a color treatment costs $75.

"It gives people the opportunity to come into the Ted Gibson Salon, have a five-star, luxury experience, but not necessarily pay full price," Gibson said.

Another place many people are cutting back to save some money is the gym.

Elite trainer Kacy Duke has a long list of celebrity clients who swear by her methods and pay in the ballpark of $200 an hour for her services.

Now she's reaching out with a new community-based grassroots campaign. You pay $20 to take the class.

"It's all on E-mail, so you would have to be part of the E-mail," she said. "And the messages would update you on the venue, which changes all the time."
