Wildfires in Upstate NY, NJ

BLOOMINGBURG, N.Y. A massive forest fire spread over about 229 acres in Sullivan County in upstate New York.

A fire official says no one was injured in the blaze that started around 3:00 p.m.

along Shawanga Lodge Road between the villages of Bloomingburg and Wurtsboro.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to more than two dozen homes along a mountain ridge. It was under control by 9:30 p.m.

In New Jersey, a fast-moving forest fire burned more than 200 acres in the Pinelands National Reserve along the border between Galloway Township and Egg Harbor City.

The fire was reported at 2:15 p.m. Officials said one elderly resident with an existing respiratory problem was evacuated as a precaution.

Several state and area fire departments responded to the scene, and most of the blaze had been contained by late Saturday night.

Authorities said moderate winds and wetness in the Atlantic County area helped keep the fire from burning out of control.
