Climb for Jersey Animal Coalition

July 5, 2009 What prompted you to undertake this ambitious project?
Kilimanjaro idea began over a year ago as a 50th birthday celebration for our good friend Mark from London. (8 friends will be joining us from London). We adopted our two dogs from JAC and now cannot imagine our lives without them, so feel the desire to give back to the shelter. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to the shelter - NOT to fund our trip. We thought that our shelter animals could benefit from our training exercises along with us. We want to celebrate JAC's twentieth year as an animal rescue group.

What kind of organization are you?
We are an animal rescue group - primarily dogs and cats, with an occasional ferret, rabbit, parrot and once, a chicken! We make space for newcomers by adopting and not euthanizing! We take in any animal regardless of age or physical condition as long as space is available. We neuter or spay every animal prior to adoption, unless they are too young, in which case we offer the low cost State program. We take pride in also being an educational facility. We have involved all segments of our communities - Girl Scouts, public and private schools and Seton Hall college students. We have served as a classroom for the Bergen County College for Veterinary Technicians. Humane Ed classes in which we stress the mutual dependence and benefits of the human-animal bond.

How did Jersey Animal Coalition get started?
There was no place for stray, lost and abandoned animals to go, except to kill shelters. We felt a need for a safe sanctuary for these animals and in 1989, began paying local vets boarding fees until we could find homes for all of them. We held monthly Adoption Days in parking lots. All along, we were putting aside money in hopes of building a shelter. With a financial boost from our towns, we finally opened in July of 2005.

How many adoptions do you average a year?
We average about 800 adoptions of dogs and cats.
