Mom killed, infant critical after stabbing in NJ

JERSEY CITY Four firefighters who helped treat the baby had to be taken off duty because they were traumatized by the child's condition.

That's just a glimpse at the monster police are seeking.

Jersey City Police say Jacqueline Reyes was already dead when her husband returned to the family's ninth-floor apartment.

Investigators say he found both his wife and son with several stab wounds.

A witness took a photo showing Reyes' infant on a gurney being rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

"I've been here 27 years," neighbor Jerome Meadows said. "Things happen all the time, but not like this. This is really scary."

Investigators confirm the father works in the maintenance department of the couple's Montgomery Avenue home.

Sources say he dropped off their 4-year-old daughter at school Tuesday morning, went to work in the building, and then came home for lunch around noon.

Police found no sign of forced entry and no motive for the attack.

Investigators are questioning the victim's husband, who neighbors described as a loving father of two.

"They used to be really happy," neighbor Danny Rodriguez said. "He would walk the kids to school every morning...they were really happy." Neighbors say they're desperate for better security in the building.

"Early in the year, there was a lady who was beaten in the hallway," resident Will Hancock said. "But it's surprising...this area is very secure."

Investigators are also studying surveillance footage in the area of the apartment building.
