No one realized that Gussie Bing was missing from the Bethel Baptist Day Care Center, located on Hoyt Street in the Cobble Hill section, until a stranger found him walking on the street and called police.
"How did a 4-year-old child walk out of the classroom?" Gussie's mother, Shameka Davis, said. "I still don't understand that. He walked down the stairs and walked out like he was supposed to be gone."
Gussie somehow knew when to cross busy streets, surrounded by dangerous cars and traffic. Only one person reached out to help.
"Only a man on a bike helped him," Davis said.
That man, Salvatore Frasciello, found Gussie about four blocks away at the corner of Court and Degraw streets and called cops.
"I don't know where he came from or how he got there," Frasciello said. "It was strange just seeing him standing on the corner."
"I was crying," Gussie said. "Then I was walking in the park. Then I was lost."
Gussie says the cops came and got him, and he told them where he lived. He told his mom he left the day care center because he didn't like his teacher.
"God was watching over him," Davis said. "That's why he made it across. And somebody found him. Nobody had no explanation at the school."
School officials had no comment to Eyewitness News.
"The teacher told the director that it was six children in the classroom when he left out the school, which doesn't matter," Davis said. "You're supposed to keep your eye on the children at all times."
Davis is holding the school accountable and has now taken Gussie and his 2-year-old brother Gabriel out of the day care. She can't help but think the worst could have happened.
"My child being dead, killed by a car, or kidnapped and never found," she said. "Cause some stranger could have took him or a crazy person and he would have been missing all this time."
As for Gussie, he just says he is glad to be home.
