High school student fatally struck by car

BROOKLYN

Police say the student, a ninth grader, was hit and killed on Rockaway Parkway near Avenue J just before 8 a.m.

"She was nice. She was always smiling," said Sammy Alawiy.

Grief counselors immediately went to Canarsie High School to talk to distraught students.

And police lined the street making sure students got home safely.

Witnesses say the victim was crossing the street with a friend.

"They got off the 60 bus and picked up their breakfast and a school bus had stopped and put the sign out and the car went around it and she was a few feet behind her friend and she went up in the air and hit the concrete," said Joyce DeHoney.

It looks like the victim was trying to cross this busy four-lane road in the middle of the block.

Police say 35-year-old man was behind the wheel of the white BMW that struck her. Police are still trying to determine if that driver passed the stopped school bus.

After hitting the teen, the Philadelphia man hit Rita Belbridge's parked Nissan, causing a chain reaction.

"I was frantic because I just had my car service. But when they told about that child everything went out the window because this is material it can be replaced. That child can't be replaced. My heart goes out to her family," said Rita Belbridge.

Police continue to investigate but believe no criminality was involved so the driver was not charged.
