Pedestrian killed by vehicle fleeing police

EAST ORANGE, N.J.

Eyewitnesses say it was a 61-year-old man who was rundown by a carjacker.

The man struck on the front lawn of a church where he worked as a trustee. The suspect is in custody but not before a wild chase through the streets.

East Orange police combed through the intersection of Glenwood and Springdale as they investigated the death of the man.

The drama unfolded in front of the home of Mildred Baker. She didn't see it happen, but she quickly learned a man had been rundown by a carjacker.

"I just saw them working on him. I didn't know how bad it was. I'm so sorry to hear he died," she said.

The prosecutor's office says it all started at 9:50 Friday morning in West Orange Twsp. A municipal worker inside an unmarked Ford Explorer was carjacked in the lot.

The worker was not injured as police chased after the carjacker. Residents say James Calloway Sr. was walking out of the church where he works as a trustee just as the police chase came through East Orange

The car jumped up the track right onto the front lawn of the St Mark AME church.

Calloway probably had no time to react.

The suspect struck Calloway and kept driving. Police eventually caught 21-year- old Jamal Abdul Silveia, a few blocks away. But it was too late for Calloway.
