Portion of Hudson River opens to swimmers

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y.

/*Westchester County*/ officials say swimmers are safe in Sleepy Hollow and all points south after a sewer main break was fixed on Friday. But swimmers and boaters should avoid direct contact with the river north of /*Sleepy Hollow*/ until further notice because of high levels of bacteria in the water.

/*Philipse Manor Beach*/ is set to reopen but /*Croton Point Park Beach*/ remains closed.

Officials say a broken pipe discovered in /*Ossining*/ on Thursday sent an estimated million and a half gallons of sewage a day into a creek near the river.

Last month, about 200 million gallons of raw sewage spewed into the /*Hudson River*/ when a treatment plant in Manhattan was taken offline after an engine room fire.

A report issued Tuesday by the environmental group Riverkeeper said sewage makes swimming in the Hudson unsafe 21 percent of the time.
