Residents escape fire on Upper East Side

NEW YORK

It started just before 11 p.m. inside a deli at East 88th Street and 3rd Avenue.

The fire spread through the walls to the apartments above.

Most of the people living in the building got out on their own using fire escapes.

But one woman was overcome by smoke.

"As the units were going upstairs with the hose line, they found her on the stairs, she had collapsed," said FDNY Deputy Chief John Hodgens.

"They escorted her out of the building, she was conscious and she was taken to the hospital."

In addition to the one resident, six firefighters were treated for minor injuries.

There's still no word on what started the fire.
