Flooding devastates Carle Place neighborhoods

CARLE PLACE, N.Y.

Families are cleaning up after 12-18 inches of water flooded their homes Wednesday afternoon after a torrential downpour.

"We keep begging for some help," said Karen Santoro, a /*Carle Place*/ resident.

Karen Santoro and her husband Carl lost precious photographs and thousands of dollars of rugs and furniture when floodwater inundated their first floor.

Public works employees pumped out most of the floodwater, but the damage inside dozens of homes will takes months to repair.

"Give me some relief from what we are dealing with here," Santoro said.

Karen and her neighbors on Fairfield Avenue in Carle Place are asking local officials to fix the problem, to stop the rush of water from nearby Mineola every time there is a torrential downpour.

Wednesday's flash flooding was so quick and so severe, some homeowners were trapped in their homes.

After the last flood, Thomas Festa set about renovating his home. Now, just six weeks after the renovation was completed, Festa has to start all over again.

"Today we got caught, the water came down quickly, looked like a lake out front, like waterfront property," Festa said.

The lake outside their home may have receded, but the frustration remains.

"We pay a lot of property taxes and it should be taken care of, it should have been taken care of years ago," a resident said.
