Man in critical condition after Long Island boat accident

ATLANTIC BEACH, L.I.

An eight and ten-year-old boy were plucked out of the rough waters just two miles south of the Rockway Inlet.

They were taken to the Atlantic Beach rescue station with their fathers around 10:30 on Saturday morning.

All in all, six passengers were rescued – five of them by Martin Safer and John Bologna.

Safer pulled out the father and son, Bologna rescued the other three on his own. The two kids and one man were wearing life vests.

However, a sixth fisherman was still missing at the time. He was later recovered by an NYPD diver and taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

"It was incredibly lucky, just incredibly lucky," said Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack.

Police say the water was very rough at the time of the accident, but the cause is still unknown. The boat was brought back to the Nassau County Police Marine Bureau in Bay Park so investigators can find out exactly what happened.
