Politicians, activists to rally against Zadroga cuts

NEW YORK

They will call for the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to be exempt from looming budget cuts.

Zadroga was a New York City police officer who died of a respiratory disease after working in the rubble of the twin towers.

U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer will be joined by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Congressman Peter King, 9/11 first responders and community survivors at 11:15 a.m. at 7 World Trade.

The looming 2013 budget cuts, known as sequestration, already exempts veterans and at least six federal programs which aid the sick and injured.

A preliminary report by the Office of Budget and Management (OMB) says that $38 million is slated to be slashed from 9/11 health programs.
