The car caught fire in the eastbound lanes near the Grand Central Parkway and Kew Gardens Interchange just before 5 a.m.
The eastbound lanes were completely closed down, with traffic slowly moving on the service road.
There were also extensive westbound delays due to emergency vehicles and rubbernecking.
The circumstances regarding the accident and any injuries are unknown at this time.
The highway reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
