Robbery suspect dead in Brooklyn police shooting

NEW YORK

Authorities say a suspect was shot by a police officer outside an apartment complex on Dumont Avenue in the East New York section just after 1 a.m.

Officers were responding to a report of a gunpoint robbery in progress by a passing livery cab driver. The officers then reported hearing gunshots, and they exited their vehicle to find two men struggling over a gun.

The supposed robbery victim, a 28-year-old man, yelled to the officers for help.

At this point, the 50-year-old suspect reportedly turned towards the officers and fired one round at them.

Upon taking cover, one of the officers returned fire, discharging one round from his service weapon, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect attempted to flee the location, but was found hiding under a vehicle, where a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver was also recovered.

EMS responded to the location and rushed the suspect to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The officer involved in the shooting was removed to Jamaica Hospital for trauma.

The initial robbery victim was not struck during the struggle, and sustained lacerations and contusions as a result of the incident.

The investigation was ongoing.
