Brooklyn wants fireworks back on the East Side

WILLIAMSBURG

People along the East River say it's their turn to get an up close seat to the show and they want to see the fireworks return to their side.

From Williamsburg to Greenpoint to Long Island City, millions of Brooklyn and Queens residents once enjoyed the Macy's Fireworks Spectacular, which was staged in the East River for decades.

In 2009, the show went west to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration, and the fireworks stayed there ever since.

Once again this year, Macy's barges will be on the Hudson River giving prime views to spectators on the West Side and in New Jersey.

Some years, there have been simultaneous displays on the Hudson and in New York Harbor.

Elected officials say Macy's was willing to do that again. They are calling for the fireworks to come back to the east side.
