New York City Parks Department Commissioner Veronica White says Thursday the statue of Robinson and Pee Wee Reese was power-washed and sand-blasted. She says stenciling of the inscription on the base of the statue will continue Friday.
Also Thursday, Robinson's wife, Rachel Robinson, said on Twitter she was saddened by what she called the senseless act of defacing the statute. She said bias crimes have no place in our society.
The words "Heil Hitler," an expletive and racist epithets were discovered Wednesday scrawled on the statue in black marker. Authorities are investigating.
The Daily News is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
