Red Cross gives $500,000 to Food Bank of New York to aid seniors

NEW YORK

The grant was announced Thursday.

The Food Bank will distribute the funds to its network of member organizations.

Those groups will help seniors make use of assistance like a grocery program, tax services, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The funds will be used to help almost 5,700 senior citizens.

They live along the east and south shores of Staten Island; in the Coney Island and Red Hook sections of Brooklyn; and the Far Rockaway section of Queens.

The Red Cross has previously given $4.48 million to the Food Bank to help people affected by Sandy with emergency feeding services.
