Walcott spent nearly three years in the position after replacing controversial pick Cathie Black.
Reflecting on his time, Walcott said reforms under Mayor Michael Bloomberg changed the system for the better.
He cited the creation of a teacher evaluation system and opening the school bus system for competitive bidding as two of his key victories, as well as reopening schools after Superstorm Sandy. Though he sometimes clashed with the teachers union, Walcott said he considers his position "the best job in the world."
Walcott started his day by walking his grandsons to school at PS 36 in St. Albans, Queens. He will then visit Bard High School and his alma mater, Francis Lewis High School,
Those will be followed by visits to Queens Metropolitan High School and alma mater IS 192.
Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has not yet named Walcott's successor.
