A school board on Long Island is debating gender and considering whether a homecoming king must be a male student.

17-year-old Faith Shepherd, a senior at Central Islip Senior High, was named homecoming king in October even though she is female.

Shepherd is a lesbian.

She decided to run for homecoming king to make a statement about gender roles.

The school board wants to create a new policy, but deferred any decision until a later date.

The school board plans to take up the issue again next month.
