FDNY battery giveaway for smoke, CO detectors

NEW YORK

The FDNY fire safety education unit is giving away 30,000 batteries throughout the five boroughs.

"A working smoke detector is vital to escaping and surviving a fire," said New York City Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. "Every year, in 75 percent of fire-related deaths in New York City there is no working smoke detector present, and this year already nine people have died where there was no working smoke detector."

The FDNY is also handing out electronic candles and fire safety literature. The batteries were donated to the FDNY Foundation by Duracell.
