New York City woman kidnapped, taken to Utah for prostitution, cops say

NEW YORK

Police arrested 26-year-old Jean Joseph and alleged accomplice Tara Pinnock at a hotel in Salt Lake City.

The 23-year-old victim told police that Joseph took her from New York City and planned to force her into prostitution.

She managed to escape and call 911 at the hotel.

"She told them she had been taken from New York City from a male who told her he was going to use her as a prostitute," Salt Lake City Police Sergeant Robin Heiden said.

Police seized a Mercedes with New York license plates, believed to be the vehicle that transported the woman.

Authorities say the woman did appear to be a victim and claimed she tried escaping prior to arriving in Utah.

"She's got some old injuries," Heiden said. "She indicates it started in New York, ended up in Pennsylvania, and ended up in Denver and then Salt Lake City."

Police don't believe Salt Lake City was their destination, but they say the victim had no idea where the trio was headed.

When they found the victim, authorities say she was quite despondent

"She was actually hiding when they responded," Heiden said. "She was very traumatized."

The woman is under police protection.
