Driver, passenger unharmed after car slams into Mattress Firm store in Hartsdale
HARTSDALE, Westchester County (WABC) -- A car crashed into a Mattress Firm store in Westchester County on Friday morning.
It happened just after 9 a.m. on Central Avenue.
Fortunately the store was closed at the time of the crash and officials do not believe anyone is injured.
The woman driving the car said she was trying to back up from a gas station next door when something happened and she went over the curb, hit a dumpster, and went through the glass of the store.
A passenger was also inside the car at the time.
The Hartsdale Fire Department chief said it doesn't appear there was significant damage to the structure, but the glass in the front of the store was shattered and there is some damage to a back wall.
He also says the front wheel of the car was resting on the railing of a staircase so firefighters had to stabilize it to make sure they were able to get the driver and the passenger out safely.
Store manager Ana Nunez was surprised to get the phone call about what had happened.
"An associate who works around here, he was going to the gym and then he called me and said 'hey I just passed by the store and a car is inside your store,'" Nunez said.
Nunez said she is just thankful that no one was hurt.
"They told me they were OK, I wasn't really thinking about the building, a building is a building," Nunez said.
She said it is too early to know when the store will be cleaned up and back open for business.
