EAST ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) -- A man is dead after being shot in the head in Queens on Wednesday, and police say it may have stemmed from a dispute that took place in the street.
The shooting happened at 25th Ave. and Humphreys St. in East Elmhurst just after 4:30 p.m.
Police and neighbors say there appeared to be some kind of heated dispute on the street between the victim, a man in his 20s, and a suspect, which lasted as long as 10 minutes, before the victim was shot in the head.
He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst where he was pronounced dead.
Leading up to the shooting, multiple residents say they saw a woman with a man walking down the block. Then, a second man approached them and got into a verbal dispute. What that argument was about is still unclear.
Residents on Humphreys Street ran out of their homes and into the street after they heard the gunshots ring out.
"I was in the kitchen in the back of the house and I heard 'bang, bang, bang,'" said resident Michael Groneveldt.
"I was watching television and I heard four gunshots and then I went outside and I saw the guy laying down on the grass with a bullet wound to his head," said resident Reggie Riley.
The gunfire erupted right in front of Groneveldt's home.
"My wife came out says, 'Mike somebody's lying on the ground there,'" Groneveldt said. "He's lying there. The cops, the EMS were here by that time, giving him compressions and air on his mouth."
Detectives scoured the neighborhood for security camera footage and pored over a bicycle left lying on the scene.
The East Elmhurst neighborhood is described as a sleepy part of Queens filled with families.
"It's very unnerving because bullets can go anywhere," Riley said. "I was thinking, my grandkids need to get in the house. That's what I thought."
Witnesses say they saw the suspect fleeing on foot, looking confused as to which way to run. They say they pointed him out to the police
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
