NJ Transit, Amtrak rail service resumes with limited service in and out of Penn Station
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Those returning from the Thanksgiving weekend were met with trouble on the rails aboard New Jersey Transit and Amtrak on Monday morning.
NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor rail service was suspended in both directions around 9 a.m. due to Amtrak overhead wire issues.
By 10:40 a.m., trains had resumed with limited service in and out of Penn Station.
Raritan Valley service will originate and terminate at Newark Penn Station and is subject to up to 60-minute delays.
Amtrak service was also temporarily suspended between Philadelphia and New York on the Northeast Corridor but has since been partially restored.
Passengers should still expect delays up to 30 minutes or an hour.
Limited service was restored but the domino effect was a point of contention for travelers. Amtrak passengers had to rebook on another train to reach their destination.
There was a long line of passengers hoping to get back home after the holiday. Many had traveled for Thanksgiving and had waited until Monday to leave in an effort to avoid crowds.
When they got to Penn Station Newark they only had to glance at the big board to see their worst fears come true.
The delays they had wanted to avoid turned into train cancellations.
College students Eyewitness News spoke to said it was unwelcome added stress with finals right around the corner.
Some New Jersey Transit service was rerouted into Hoboken, but trains were packed.
