PATERSON, N.J. (WABC) -- Two people are in custody after a shooting where police say a suspect opened fire on an officer.

A Paterson Police Department officer was responding just after 1 a.m. Saturday to a report of a disturbance on Union Avenue at a bar.

When he arrived, there was a shooting in progress, and a gun battle ensued. Shots were fired at the officer and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect. A second person was also shot and a third person may also have been struck in the gunfire.

One suspect was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The second person arrived at the hospital in a car.

The police officer was not injured.

Charges against the suspect are pending. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating.
