Mount Vernon teen gets up to 10 years for rapes of 23-year-old woman, 11-year-old girl

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (WABC) -- A 16-year-old Westchester County boy who was convicted of abducting and raping a 23-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl in separate incidents was sentenced Tuesday to 3 1/3 to 10 years in prison.

Javon Roberts pleaded guilty to first-degree rape first-degree criminal sexual act, the top counts of a 28-count indictment, in July.

"The brutal and violent acts this defendant perpetrated against these two victims, one an 11-year-old girl, belie the courage displayed by these women in coming forward," District Attorney Janet DiFiore said. "Additionally, excellent detective work and forensic analysis led to this defendant being held accountable today for the depraved crimes he committed."

On October 20, 2014 between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Roberts abducted the 23-year-old victim, who was walking home from work in Mount Vernon. Placing a knife to her throat, he attempted to rape her before determining that they were too exposed at their current location. He forced her to come with him to the Grimes Elementary School Building on South 10th Street, where he raped her.

At the conclusion of the attack, Roberts walked the victim to the corner and let her leave. She immediately notified police, who then attempted to locate Roberts, to no avail.

Then, on December 4, 2014, an 11-year-old girl was walking home from a Christmas concert at a local library in Mount Vernon at approximately 8 pm. Roberts abducted her and once again took his victim to the grounds of the Grimes Elementary School. In a stairwell adjacent to the playground, Roberts pulled out a knife and raped the girl.

When the child screamed in pain, Roberts told her, "Shut up or I will kill you." The entire attack went on for approximately two hours.

The victim was eventually let go.

Later, police interviewed Roberts on an unrelated investigation. The water bottle he drank from was handed over to the Westchester County Crime lab, and forensics was able to link him to the two sexual attacks.

Although Roberts was tried in Criminal Court, as he was less than 16 years old at the time of the crimes, he is considered a juvenile offender.
