The investigation did take over a year but police say the puzzle pieces all fit. Prosecutors say they have strong circumstantial evidence and strong forensic evidence, for what they are calling a full blooded execution.
Alicia Perez Hall hid her face and said nothing as she left court, after watching her father stand accused of killing her mother. Carlos Perez-Olivo is charged with second degree murder in the death of his wife Peggy. Last November Perez claimed he was forced to the side of road by a gunman as the couple drove back from a night in the city. After a 13 month investigation, prosecutors say the shooter was Perez himself.
"Mrs. Perez-Olivo was seat in the front seat of the car next to her husband. Mr. Perez-Olivo pulled the car over and he shot his wife once in the back of the head," Westchester County D.A., Janet Difiore said.
Perez was arrested yesterday at his Chappaqua home--just a few doors down from bill and Hillary Clinton. From the beginning police said his story didn't add up.
At one point during the investigation, the 59-year old disbarred attorney, charged at detectives after being asked did he murder his wife.
Today prosecutors displayed what they say is the murder weapon--a 32-caliber pistol which was recovered in a nearby lake by police divers
"I will flat out tell you that he did not do that. He was assaulted, Peggy was shot in the head, Carlos was shot in the abdomen. He struggled with the assailant.." Defense attorney Robert Buckley said.
The district attorney will not comment on what the possible motive in this case is. Perez will remained jailed. His bail has been set at $1 million.
