A three-mile stretch of the road is closed between Woonton Street in Boonton and Taylor Town Road in Montville while repairs are made.
The repair was expected to take about 12 hours.
All residents were asked to conserve water during the repair. About 5,000 of 9,000 residents of Boonton have been asked to boil their water before drinking as a precaution.
